HIV can only be
transmitted via
3 specific bodily fluids, namely blood, sexual secretions (semen/vaginal fluids) and breast milk. Therefore, you can only get HIV:
- through unprotected sex, the most common way it is spread in Singapore
- through the sharing of needles - especially if you're an intravenous drug abuser; and/or
- through contaminated blood transfusions* at hospitals using unscreened blood
(* all blood donations in Singapore are tested for HIV and are safe for transfusions.)
An
HIV-positive mother can also pass on HIV to her baby during the stages of
pregnancy, childbirth and/or breastfeeding.
